Archaeology

During the course of the project the local archaeology group Arteamus carried out archaeological surveys of the castle and the findings are reported in an archaeology report and a literature search.

The topographical and geophysical surveys found little evidence of structures on the site, which doesn’t mean to say that structures were not there – it simply means that they can’t be confirmed without an excavation. An excavation could reveal the post holes of wooden buildings or towers – but this was beyond the scope of this project. The castle is protected by its status as a scheduled ancient monument and its ownership by the Peak District National Park means that it is not now under any threat of damage. Although an excavation of the castle site might reveal more information, the process of excavation is destructive and so might damage the archaeology the project was seeking to protect. However, for the first time accurate survey data of the site are now available providing the clearest picture of Pilsbury castle to date and providing an opportunity for a fresh interpretation of the site.
