The Project The Midsummer Finale pulled together the various threads of the Pilsbury interpretation project on one gloriously sunny weekend. The children’s banners and tapestry decorated the site whilst the Nottingham Normans provided an authentic living history encampment with crafts and military combat displays. Against the Norman backdrop a variety of performances occurred throughout the day, including a mummers play performed by the Longnor Players, medieval puppet show, a packhorse train and “market”, jugglers and music, medieval food and the children’s dramatic performance. Visitors to the site came in Norman/Anglo Saxon costume, following the costume making workshops and the whole day lent an atmosphere to the site that will not be forgotten. The archaeologists brought Pilsbury into the 21st century giving guided talks, discussing the archaeology in detail and demonstrating the archaeological surveying techniques they had used. Whilst at nearby Hartington an indoor exhibition displayed the results of the oral history project, the archaeological research and the children’s school work and delicate artwork. And finally - the two interpretative panels that kickstarted the project… These two panels were originally commissioned by the Peak District National Park and English Heritage to help visitors understand the castle. The signs, located at both entrances to the castle site not only explain the significance of this very special place, but also encourage passing visitors to explore and discover the site more fully. These organizations kindly allowed the money set aside for the panels to be used as match funding for a Local Heritage Initiative Grant making the Pilsbury Castle Interpretation Project possible and extending the depth of understanding of the site much more widely amongst the local community. |
