Historic Pilsbury
Historical Documents
Introduction
At the start of the Pilsbury project we posed several questions to both the local community and to a variety of experts and academics. We continue this process on the website and have gathered together a wide range of materials from different sources to whet your curiosity.
·Why was there a castle at Pilsbury?
·What might the Castle have looked like?
·What was life like for the Saxons and Normans?
·How has life changed over the centuries?
·Has there been continuous human settlement in the Upper Dove Valley?
We have collected together manuscripts from a variety of sources which we invite you to peruse. These include:
·The evidence from prehistory such as archaeological reports and maps
·The evidence from the language still in use in the locality – place-names and field-names
·The evidence from medieval records such as the Domesday Book and the Bayeux tapestry
·The evidence from research into Norman castles, acquisition of land, forests, parks and monastic granges
·The evidence from social customs today and in medieval times such as food and drink, hunting, shelter, remedies, farming, markets and transport.
·The evidence of the landscape
·The evidence from personal diaries, letters and reports
We believe that these wide-ranging sources will shed light for all of us on the historical significance of Pilsbury Castle. Browse through them for yourself to form your own conclusions.
